Introduction

TheMotoManual is operated by an individual, not a company. This Cookie Policy explains, plainly, everything TheMotoManual stores in your browser. There isn't much: no advertising or tracking cookies, and no third-party analytics in use.

What We Use

Session authentication cookies

When you sign in, Better Auth sets session cookies so TheMotoManual knows you're logged in on subsequent requests. These are strictly necessary for the service to work — without them you couldn't access your account, Q&A history, or garage.

Preference cookies

TheMotoManual also sets two first-party preference cookies:

NEXT_LOCALE records which language version of the site (English or Chinese) you are viewing, so that account emails such as verification and password-reset messages can be sent in that language. It is set only when that language differs from your browser's language setting, or when you later switch languages, and it is a session cookie that your browser deletes when you close it.
sidebar_state records whether you last expanded or collapsed the sidebar shown when you are signed in. It is set only when you expand or collapse the sidebar, and it expires after 7 days.

Preference storage (localStorage)

TheMotoManual stores a small number of interface preferences in your browser's local storage, such as your light/dark theme choice and whether voice playback (text-to-speech) is turned on. These stay on your device and are not sent to any analytics service.

What We Don't Use

No advertising cookies
No tracking or cross-site profiling cookies
No third-party analytics in use. Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights are both switched off in our configuration. The starter kit TheMotoManual is built on also ships components for Google Analytics, Umami, Plausible, Ahrefs, DataFast, OpenPanel, Seline, PostHog and Microsoft Clarity; each of them loads only in a production build and only when its own environment variable (an account or site ID) has been configured. None of them is configured for TheMotoManual, so none of them loads or sets anything in your browser. If that ever changes, we will update this page.

Managing Cookies

Blocking the authentication cookies will simply prevent you from staying signed in; the preference cookies are not required for the service to work. Most browsers let you clear cookies and local storage for a site through their settings if you want to reset your preferences.

We may update this Cookie Policy as the service evolves. Changes take effect when posted on this page; the date above reflects the most recent revision.
